Call To Action

Below are the current taxi rules and regulations and also the very straightforward procedures to file a complaint.

My request is simple: whenever you take a Hoboken taxi, request (if not insist) that they follow the regulations. Every single time a cab violates a rule file a complaint - they will be fined. I said it was simple.

I believe that with all of us policing this situation and simply defending our legal rights we can resolve this issue very quickly.

Also, please share the true regulations with others; the more of us that know and demand our rights the better.

Thanks...

  2. I took a cab a few days ago around 6:30pm. I was the first in the cab and two more fares were allowed in. I was the last drop off. I didn't mind so much but thae cabbie broke at least two rules:

    1) No more than 2 fares.
    2) First fare dropped off first.

  3. Yep, that happens all the time. Please report it.

The way they run the stand may only seem like a minor inconvenience, but it's exactly the same as if you flagged a cab in the city and then the cabbie picked up another two fares without asking and then dropped them off first - just plain wrong.

And there are definitely enough cabs for everyone to get there own. When ever the Licensing Division is out there enforcing the regulations at the stand (as they do from time to time) everyone gets their own cab, there are plenty of cabs for everyone and the line moves much more quickly because the cabbies aren't doing the whole polling to see where you're going bit.

I live in Jersey City and wish there could be some clarification on the rules and fares for us. "Negotiable" seems to mean they can refuse us, bundle four people into the cab, and charge each of us some amount that changes every time. (Last time I took the 1.3 mile ride, it was 8 dollars.)

I think a posted list of fares to common non-Hoboken destinations would be a useful thing to implement. I'd be willing to take them more often if I didn't get that slimy rip-off feeling every time.

  5. @Rather Walk To JC:

The *only* thing that is negotiable to JC is the price. The regulations state that they *must* take a fare anywhere within a 25 mile radius and also that there can only be 1 fare per cab unless agreed to by the first fare. Also, the cabbie cannot select what fares they take based on destination, etc. - they *must* take the fare that enters the cab, wherever they are going (within the 25 mile radius).

If they don't comply file a complaint (see my earlier post on that procedure). The fine for refusing a fare is $200 - not a lot, but certainly more than the $15 or $20 bucks they would mike by skipping you for 3 Hoboken fares (also against the rules, by the way: it's a maximum of 2 fares, regardless of any consent).

Regarding having standard fares to certain destinations outside Hoboken - while I admittedly don't know all the regulations, etc. around that it sounds like a great idea. You should suggest it to Annette Chaparro of the Licensing Division. Her contact information is in the same post.
